The Black Sea coastal resort Ureki occupies a prominent place among the health and healing resorts of Europe with its unique and exceptional medical factors. For over 30 years, the healing properties of this resort have been medically studied and explored by groups of scientists of institutes of healing and resort studies, G. Koniashvili Institute of Physiotherapy and branch institutions, the Tbilisi State Medical University, Moscow Institute of Resorts and Physiotherapy, Tbilisi State University, the Academy of Sciences of Georgia. The resort is in the magnetic area created by titanomagnetite and ferromagnetic fractions of the sand; mineralogical composition of this magnetite sand further enhances its stimulating factor. In addition, scientific studies proved that magnetic area of the magnetite sand is an independent strong stimulating factor, which can effectively cure diseases of cardiovascular and musculoskeletal system if this factor is used correctly and with proper dosage.

Magnetite Sand, Studies Of Its Generation And Accumulation

300 to 700 meters wide coastal zone streching from the river Supsa to the river Natanebi is rich in grained titanium and ferromagnetic sand of different degree. The sources note the existence of magnetic sand on the Ureki coast from the beginning of the 11th century. The first official records about this fact are found in scientific works of academician G. Abich, and in 1887 deposits of magnetic sand are shown on the geological map by S. Symonovich and A. Sorokina.

Magnetic sands were created through extracting into the sea of material resulting from erosion of extrusive Eocene deposits of Adjarian-Trialetian plicate system by the rivers Supsa and Natanebi.

Results Of Studies Of Complex Healing Factors Of The Resort

The natural riches of the resort Ureki - warm sea, miraculous magnetite sand beaches, sun, mild subtropical climate and rich subtropical nature - create exceptional favourable conditions for rest and healing.

Positive resort factors of Ureki can be used to cure a wide range of diseases, in particular: cardiovascular and peripheral vascular systems, functional diseases of central nervous system, diseases of musculoskeletal system of different nature, etc.. The healing properties of the resort are successfully used to cure children, as well as adults.

From 1963 the first episodic medical researches of Ureki resort factors were made by N. Kartsivadze, V. Tokhadze, D. Zoidze, V. Vasadze and others.

Systematic and targeted studies of Ureki resort factors for healing cardiovascular diseases started in 1977 by scientists and doctors of Institute of Resort and Physiotherapy of Georgia and its branch institutions, the Tbilisi Medical University, the Moscow Institute of Resort and Physiotherapy. It has been scientifically proved that mild subtropical climate and magnetite sand baths have positive impact on treatment of patients with hypertonic disease, atherosclerosis, chronic ischemia heart disease, valvular heart diseases of different origins. Continuous experimental medical researches allowed physician scientists to establish positive impact of the Ureki sand on human organism, namely, on cardiovascular and central nervous system, as well as on musculoskeletal system. This influence is determined not only by thermal effect, but, to larger extent, by continuous effects of magnetic field.

The physician scientists (N. Semenava, 1948, A. Vyalov, 1968, G. Blinkova, 1969, A. Kogan, 1971, G. Yakovleva, 1973, T. Zhgenti, 1972, G. Komarova, 1971 and others) concluded that main feature of biological effect of the constant magnetic field is its ability to change functional conditions of central and autonomic nervous system. These changes, on their part, have impact on conditions of cardiovascular system, respiratory system and functioning of smooth muscles, etc.

Many physician scientists have examined people, who were exposed to the effects of magnetic field of lower intensity. They found out that their heart rate had decreased, as well as the blood pressure, the blood flow increased, amount of blood in circulation decreased, i.e. there were improvements in hemodynamic data. The basis of the physiological reaction of the organism to the influence of the magnetic field is enhanced vagotonic effect, which, on its part, is linked with the decrease of vagotonic tone.

According to the medical observations, effects of constant magnetic field of low intensity on peripheral vascular systems widen capillaries, influences overall hemodynamics of the organism, which is indicated by the decreased rate of heart beats and the blood pressure, increased blood flow, improved coronary blood inflow based on electrocardiographic data, etc.

The medical observations confirm dramatic improvement in redox reaction in human body and in lipid metabolism, as well as in coagulation properties of blood.

In case of diseases of musculoskeletal system (but in absence of any active process) with lesions of the peripheral nerves and arterial vessels of the extremities, as well as with other pathological conditions, it is recommended to take sand baths – using heated sand for healing purposes. There are sand baths with naturally and artificially heated sand. The sand baths with naturally heated sand are mainly used in Yevpatoria. Resorts with healing sands exist in Germany, China, France, Italy, Japan and other countries.

The sand used for sand baths should be clean and sifted. Optimal size of individual sand grains should range within 0.25-2 millimetres (the size of Ureki sand grains range within 0,17-0, 5 millimetres). The large sized sand grains injure the skin, and the smallest ones create dust. Small thermal conductivity of the sand allows the diseased to endure sand baths comparatively smoothly, despite the high temperature of the sand. Hygroscopicity and dryness of the sand allow absorption of perspiration released by patients during the procedures.

The methodology of general sand baths with naturally heated sand is as follows: a section of the beach is surrounded by a fence for protection from wind and to ensure the best possible heating of the sand. The sand is sifted. At 6-7 a.m. this section is divided into smaller sections in the form of medallions. Hills of about 30 centimeters high are constructed around each of these sections. By 11-12 a.m. when the sand is heated up to 500 C0, a naked patient lies down in the medallion-like section. Heated sand from the hills is then spread all over the patient, leaving his/her head and chest on the left-side of the heart area not covered with sand. Patient’s head should be placed higher and shielded by a shadow to protect from the sun. It is also possible to moisten head with cold water. Duration of the general sand bath in adults ranges from 10 to 30-40 minutes, in children – from 5 to 15 minutes. At the end of the procedure, patient is entirely cleared of the sand, he/she is then covered with a sheet and left to rest for 15-20 minutes sitting up, after which sun-heated warm water is poured over the patient, who is then wiped dry. After this it is recommended to rest for 1,5-2 hours in the premises. The treatment course includes 10-15 baths.

The temperature of the sand, heated by the sun, can reach over 600 C0, but at the depth of 5 centimeters its temperature decreases significantly. Therefore, even on the hottest days, if the sand is well mixed, no burns occur.

Therapeutic effect of sand baths is mainly determined by combination of thermal factor and mechanical impact of the sand. As for the Ureki sand, in addition there is also impact of the magnetic field. The sand spreads the warmth evenly and for a long time to the body surface causing neuromuscular reflex reaction of the vasculature. This is supported by the slow thermal radiation of the sand and its tight contact with the body surface filling its roughness. Mechanical effect of the sand baths imply pressure of the sand mass and its massaging effect on blood and lymphatic system of the skin and deeper tissues.

The sand baths have also pain relief effect; they strengthen oxidative processes in the human body and improve functioning of kidneys. Enduring the sand baths, including by elderly people, is far easier than mud applications of the same temperature.

Methodology of the sand baths with artificial heating is as follows: the cleared and sifted sand is heated in the ovens, containers, braziers or special devices. The heated sand is mixed in the bath with the cold sand until it reaches the needed temperature. A 5-centimeter layer of the heated sand is placed at the bottom. A patient lies on it and he/she is covered with 10-15 centimeter layer of sand and a woolen blanket on top. A cold compress is laid on his/her head. The duration of the procedure is from 40 to 50 minutes. After the bath, patient takes a warm shower, he/she is wrapped in the warm blanket and rest for 1-1,5 hours. Sand baths could be taken locally using small baths or warmers filled with heated sand for 1-1,5 hours. usual general sand bath starts from temperature of 450 C0 and reaches up to 550 C0. Temperature of the local sand baths can be raised up to 600 C0.

Magnetite sand causes activation of metabolism in the human skin cells. This condition implies absorption of big quantity of magnesium and iodine by the human body through the skin, which on its part helps to solve the problem with diseases of the central nervous system and chronic fatigue. It improves thyroid function, facilitates lowering of cholesterol in the human body and creates conditions of the so called “rejuvenation” of human body cells.

It is well known that cosmonauts and pilots have to fly long at supersonic speed. Due to heavy physical overloads and spending long time in the weightlessness, they often develop diseases of smooth muscles and resulting pathologies of different kinds, including impotence. Rehabilitation of such patients is difficult and is conducted in the so called special magnetic hyperbaric chambers, where they have to spend quite long time, which they endure poorly. Rehabilitation of such diseases is far more effective with the help of the Ureki magnetic sand in combination with other healing factors of the resort in the environment of mild subtropical climate.

It is well known in the medical science, that people living in the northern latitudes and traveling to the southern resorts for leisure and treatment, where the air temperature reaches 370 C0 and more, they observe lowering of immunity upon arrival and they are more exposed to respiratory diseases compared to others.

Indeed, leisure and treatment for such persons at the resorts with air temperature being 370 C0 and more is extremely contraindicated; from the medical point of view, the most optimal choice for them is to rest and get treatment at the resort with mild climate. In this context, Ureki resort has clear advantage over the famous Mediterranean and Adriatic resorts. Current scientific researches allow doctors to reveal further aspects of effects of this unique resort on many human diseases.

We hope that miraculous magnetite sand beaches, the warmest sea water in the entire Black Sea region, mild subtropical climate and convenient geographical location will make Ureki one of the most famous healing Black sea resorts of the 21st century.
